France red wine culture with nearby touristic places in the social scene
The history of wine can be traced back to 600 BC in ancient Persia, but when it comes to the origin of French wine, we have to go back to 6th century BC when Phoenicians and Celts brought grape cultivation and winemaking techniques into what is now southern France around Marseille, making wine a luxury item accompanying meals. With Roman conquests across Europe, viticulture spread rapidly along the Mediterranean coast and drinking became fashionable. However, this process was not without its challenges.
In 92 AD due to protecting vineyards on Aix-en-Provence's Adhen Valley for vinification purposes, Romans forced Gaul (now France) people destroy most vineyards resulting in first crisis. But by 280 AD laws restored freedom planting vines thus entering an important development period.
Until late 18th century during French Revolution people gained more freedom which further boosted French winery industry's growth. Today we see a diverse array of quality wines from one of world's most renowned regions for red wines production.
Now let us dive deeper into classifications and levels within French wines:
Wine classification
By color: Red Wines White Wines Rosé Wines.
Red includes various shades depending on age.
White does not limit itself only to white; initially appears as pale or light yellow-green compared with red.
Rosé has onion skin color or light pink shade between red and white.
Wine level

• Strictest regulations controlling everything from grape varieties & quantities planted up until fermentation processes under experts' approval.
• No blending allowed with other grape juices; if so would lose appellation name "Controlee".
• Labels show "Appellation + Region Name + Controlee".
Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure (VDQS)
• Transitional stage between VDQS & AOC
• If quality good enough upgrades directly to AOC
• Labels show "Appellation + Region Name + Qualite Superieure"
Vin de Pays (IGP)
• Upgraded from ordinary table wines; almost all produced in Southern European coastal areas.
o Can use only grapes grown within region boundaries for blending
