Vietti’s Decision-Making Era: How to Review Historical Search Records

In the heart of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Vietti's winemaker Luca Currado is filled with smiles. The wines of Vietti continue to excel and sell well in every vintage, from his humble Tre Vigne Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba to several Barolos. However, he has recently experienced a difficult period, especially when his family decided in 2016 to sell the winery to an American family. This decision had an impact on Currado and his wife Elena (Elena), as did the initial reactions of so-called experts.

Three years later now, Currado has reaped the rewards of this sale and has a more optimistic outlook for both recent and long-term prospects for Vietti (he always was). Recently, Wine-Searcher sat down with Currado to learn about the latest news from Vietti and our expectations for the next few years.

The sale of Vietti was clearly a harsh time for Elena and you. Three years later, do you have any regrets about it?

For us it wasn't an easy decision. As you know it's a family decision. And I'm not alone at Vietti; we have many people who are more persuasive than me in our family. For me and Elena it wasn't easy; we've always been involved.

Elena and I are direct descendants of my father and grandfather - the vineyard comes from my family lineage. But you know that sometimes you can't decide your own future entirely; there were groups within our family who wanted parts sold off.

Since I couldn't stop that happening all I could insist on was keeping Vietti's integrity intact wherever possible while doing better things if possible - not making it part of some big group where they could use Vietti just increase production under their brand name.

Therefore I believe we found a good enough home with Krause Family (from Iowa), which will invest locally but won’t exert influence over what they do there – something very clear indeed! Happy working alongside them but wanting also keep going on what i am doing!

The main thought is that we need more vineyards - We currently rent some vineyards & want be 100% owner! So during past couple yrs under Kyle Krause’s help got incredibly high quality grapes bought up by him like Ginestra Mosconi Le Coste Codana @ Castiglione Falletto Mosconi becoming representative for Castiglionne & Perbacco Langhe Nebbiolo

Future quality improvements expected in these areas:

“I think Mosconi will be very important for us”

“We already have Rocche Lazzarito Brunate Ravera”

“Another one reaching same tax level would be difficult”

Will there be new single-vineyard Barolo products?
