Laura Catena herself is so captivated by the romantic history of Malbec that she has written a book about it. "To me, Malbec has the most exciting history among all grape varieties," she explains. "It was very famous in France, but it almost became extinct many times. It's now more famous in its new home than its old one."
One fascinating discovery made by Malbec Mon Amour is that before Malbec migrated to Argentina, it revealed the outstanding status of Malbec in France. In medieval times, "black wine" based on Malbec was renowned for its dark color and was the preferred drink of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204), who was the only woman to have held both French and English thrones at once.
Malbec's fame in France was such that it was called Plant du Roi (King's Plant) and planted around King Francis I's Château de Chambord as well as his favorite monastery, Vauluisants Abbey north of Dijon! In Bordeaux, during the 1855 Médoc classification where all wine châteaux were selected for their prestige wines, it represented 60% of vineyards from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol regions - before Phylloxera ravaged them.
The book features beautiful illustrations like this one shown here: Eleanor of Aquitaine with Laura Catena (pic: screen grab). These are just some glimpses into a world where passion meets knowledge - a love letter to Argentina's flagship grape variety.
So if you're ready to embark on an unforgettable journey through time and discover how this single grape variety spread from France to conquer hearts across the globe then look no further than 'Malbec Mon Amour'.
