So, the question arises: how many years should red wine be stored for optimal quality? Let's hear what the cellar master at Yunchuan Winery has to say.

Generally, there are three categories of wines: table wine, high-quality wine, and premium wine. Table wines are best consumed within 3-5 years after release. High-quality wines can be aged for around 25 years, while premium wines can last up to 50 years.

The storage time depends on the type of grape variety. There are two types: immediate consumption and aging-worthy varieties. Most commercial wines (about 90%) fall into the former category and are best enjoyed within three years for their optimal flavor and aroma. After that period, they start losing their charm like wilted flowers.

Aging-worthy varieties belong to the latter category and can benefit from extended storage periods until they reach their peak before being consumed. These collectible wines account for only about 10% of all grape varieties and include famous labels such as Lafite Rothschild or Mouton Cadet.

Determining whether a particular vintage is meant for early consumption or long-term aging may vary depending on individual preferences but one common criterion is price - those priced below $1,000 tend towards younger vintages suitable for early drinking; those in the $1,000-$10,000 range qualify as collectibles worth waiting out some time before savoring them fully.
