So, the question remains: how many years should red wine be stored for optimal quality? Let's hear what Master Sommelier from Yunchuan Wine Estate has to say.

Generally, there are three categories of wines: table wine, high-quality wine, and vintage wine. Table wines are usually best consumed within 3-5 years after release. High-quality wines can be aged for about 25 years, while vintage wines can last up to 50 years.

The storage duration depends on the type of wine. There are two types: young-drinking and age-worthy wines. Most commercial wines (about 90%) belong to the former category and should be consumed within a few years after release when they have their peak flavor and aroma. After that, the taste will begin to deteriorate like wilted flowers.

Age-worthy wines, on the other hand, are meant for long-term aging and storage before reaching their peak quality for consumption. These collectible reds make up only about 10% of all grape varieties worldwide and include renowned brands like Lafite Rothschild or Château Margaux.

To differentiate between drinking-now versus collecting-for-later options is subjective; however, price serves as a basic guideline – those under $1k belong in the early-drinking category while prices above $1k but below $10k indicate potential collectibles.

So go ahead ask yourself next time you're at a winery tasting room - "How much am I willing to spend?"
