Vietti’s Sales: A Decisive Era for Luca Currado

In the heart of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Vietti's winemaker Luca Currado exudes a warm smile. The wines of Vietti continue to excel and have consistent sales across each vintage, from his humble Tre Vigne Barbera d'Asti and Barbera d'Alba to several Barolo cru. However, he recently experienced a difficult period, especially when his family decided to sell the winery to an American family in 2016. This decision had an impact on Currado and his wife Elena (Elena), as did the initial reactions from so-called experts - who feared the worst.

Three years later, Currado has reaped the benefits of this sale and holds more optimistic views on both short-term and long-term prospects for Vietti (he remains optimistic). Recently, Wine-Searcher sat down with Currado to learn about Vietti's latest developments and our expectations for the coming years.

The sale was undoubtedly a challenging time for Elena and him. "It wasn't easy," he said. "As you know, it was a family decision." With Elena and him being direct descendants of his father and grandfather - who founded the estate - they were involved in it all. "We're not just one person deciding our future," he explained.

"But you can't always decide your own destiny," he continued. "There are groups we deal with that want us sold." Since he couldn't stop this process, his sole condition was maintaining Vietti's integrity while doing better than before if possible.

"Therefore I don't want it to become part of a big group where they can use Vietti to increase production," he emphasized. "I think we've found a family (the Krause family from Iowa)," continuing work alongside them but keeping their influence minimal.

"The main idea is that we need more vineyards," highlighting their goal through Kyle Krause's help in purchasing unbelievable top-tier vineyards like Ginestra Mosconi Le Coste Codana in Castiglione Falletto; Mosconi will represent Castiglione Perbacco (entry-level Barolo Langhe Nebbiolo).

Future quality improvements at Castiglione Perbacco are unimaginable thanks to Mosconi addition according to him; Rocche Lazzarito Brunate Ravera are already established cru levels within their portfolio making acquiring another such level challenging — except now with Mosconi added into their ranks.

Will there be any new single-vineyard Barolo products?

Recently acquired two very important single-vineyard crus: Serre de la Tour followed by Monvigliero & Crunc Roncaglie purchase among other acquisitions; henceforth having two new exciting additions set forth amidst these grand plans under development:

1stly: 0.8 hectares land purchased at Serre de la Tour which would be released as 2018 vintage.

2ndly: From friends via long-term lease agreement acquisition including Monvigliero which would see collaboration between friend Jeremy Seysses Duval along with himself.

3rdly & lastly: Purchasing half-hectare land called Rajà at Cortese location known as Barbereasco area further expanding its reach over regional territory lands under management control encompassing three regions namely Piedmont region specifically focusing onto local sub-regions such as Asti Chianti Tuscany together forming Italy’s wine country landscape map within global wine industry sphere presence scene background contextually speaking strategically positioning themselves accordingly throughout entire world wide marketplaces or distribution channels networked worldwide sharing knowledge spreading information reaching out beyond boundaries borders geographical frontiers — “spreading love” indeed!
