Jane Cook herself expressed her excitement at the massive support for the passport plan, both from wine enthusiasts eager to explore new locations and local businesses that have signed up. She is thrilled to know that the project has had such a positive impact on these independent businesses, which bring so much unique charm and flavor to our city; without them, Cardiff would be a duller place.
One such location is Vermut, an independent microbar specializing in sherry, Montilla-Moriles wines and absinthe. Initially finding it difficult to attract local customers due to its unique model, the passport plan provided people with an excuse to visit and try something different. Vermut's site manager Jack Holtom attributes the steady growth of customer numbers over the past year largely to Cardiff Wine Passport making people feel confident enough to come in and try something new; all they need do is come in and ask for their stamp – thus eliminating any fear or apprehension about trying new things.
What's more impressive is that these newcomers are often won over by what we do here and return time after time. Breaking through the £30,000 income milestone demonstrates just how much support this concept has garnered but actually, this plan's total income impact could be even higher; Cook notes that most passport holders will choose additional food pairings and bar snacks when collecting stamps at each venue.
For now, this initiative remains exclusive to Cardiff but plans are underway for expansion into Bristol next year. Currently priced at £26 per passport holder can select six wines from 12 different city center venues.
The success of Cardiff Wine Passport not only showcases Jane Cook's innovative approach but also highlights how small-scale enterprises contribute significantly towards making cities vibrant hubs of taste exploration – as Jane herself puts it: "If it weren't for these independent businesses bringing their own unique flavors & charm...Cardiff would indeed become a duller place."
