KENDELL BROWN CHÂTEAU:A LEGENDARY WINERY IN THE HEART OF MÉDOC
Located in the prestigious Margaux appellation, Château Kedell Brown is a wine estate that boasts an impressive history dating back to 1745. The property was originally purchased by Irishman Jacques Boyd, who named it after John Lewis Brown, a prominent figure in the Bordeaux region during the 18th century.
The name "Kedell" has been subject to much debate over the years, with some suggesting that it was derived from Boyd's nickname or even a reference to his Scottish heritage. However, it is widely accepted that the name pays tribute to John Lewis Brown and his significant contributions to the region.
In 1860, Armand Lalande acquired Château Kedell Brown and restored its grandeur while maintaining its unique character. Over time, however, like many other wineries in Médoc and beyond,
the challenges of phylloxera outbreaks,
diseases such as powdery mildew,
and economic downturns took their toll on Château Kedell Brown.
In 1989,
AXA Millesimes stepped in and revitalized the estate before selling it again to British businessman Simon Halabi in 2006.
Today,
Château Kedell Brown boasts an impressive vineyard covering nearly 42 hectares of prime land with sandy soils. Its grape blend consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%), and Cabernet Franc (5%). With an average tree age of approximately
35 years old,
the grapes are harvested early autumn for optimal quality.
The winemaking process includes hand-picking followed by rigorous sorting; fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks lasting around ten days before being transferred into oak barrels for malolactic fermentation.
The final blending occurs based on grape variety and tree age from different plots within
the vineyard,
resulting in carefully crafted wines suitable for aging.
Both First Wine & Second Wine undergo secondary fermentation but differ primarily
in their aging duration - twelve months for First Wine & eighteen months
for Second Wine using equal portions of new & one-year-old oak barrels each replaced every three months with egg whites clarification method used during this period.
This meticulous approach results in well-balanced wines offering rich aromas reminiscent
of black currants
with smooth tannins
and long-lasting finish.
Some notable vintages include:
1990年、2000年、2005年、2006年、2008年、2009年和2010年。
With its rich history spanning over two centuries combined with innovative winemaking techniques,
Château Kedell Brown stands out as one among many iconic estates within Médoc's production zone.
